The newly promoted Swinford senior team got off to a winning start against Tuar Mhic Éadaigh last Saturday evening.
Tuar Mhic Éadaigh started the brighter and notched up an early lead. The Swinford team were contesting well all round the pitch, but a combination of tenacious Tuar Mhic Éadaigh tackling and some early season nerves meant scores were not getting converted.
It took 15 minutes before team captain Joe Kelly scored the first point which helped settle a nervous Swinford. However, there was only one more score from the home side in the first half while Tuar Mhic Éadaigh finished the stronger leading 0-5 to 0-2 at half time.
Swinford started the second half well and drew level within 10 minutes with some good interplay between Jack McDonnell, Colin Dempsey and Darren Campbell. When the game was in the balance, the Swinford management team made some key changes that helped Swinford maintain their strong start and they pulled ahead.
In the final minutes, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh came back at Swinford, but the Swinford held on for a satisfying 0-8 to 0-7 victory in front of their home crowd on what was an important weekend for the club.
